The art of 'Matmi' or tie-dye, is one of Thailand's oldest textile traditions, relying entirely on handcrafting techniques by skilled in-house artisans. Through these meticulous processes, the yarns are bound to create the pattern using faux nylon raffia (traditionally banana tree barks) dyed, hung-dried, unbound and then hand-woven into yardage. As a resulting of having to line up each pattern by hand-eye coordination, only about 40 cm of this exquisite type of ikat fabric can be produced each day.
